1967 Dodge Coronet RT

By 1967 GM’s success with the Pontiac GTO had caught Chrysler’s attention. Using basic market analysis in the 1960’s, GM determined that there existed a substantial number of “20 something” male buyers who would spend discretionary income on a performance (read MUSCLE) car. The GTO took off in 1964 and by 1967 the Coronet R/T along with it’s sister model, the Plymouth GTX, became the foundation of Chrysler’s legendary comeback. Dodge used the R/T or “Road and Track” name from 1967 until 1971. It was reactivated in the late 1990’s by Dodge once again to underline performance. When Dodge re-entered the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 2001, it was with the Dodge Intrepid R/T.

This example is one of 1355 440 four speed units built out of a total production run of just over 10,000 1967 Coronet R/Ts. It was built in Kansas City, Missouri and shipped to a St. Louis, MO Dodge dealer. It’s first owner subsequently relocated to West Virginia. After an intermediate number of years it was sold to Colonel in the U.S. Army who relocated to the Greater Boston, MA area. I sold a 1969 Charger RT to acquired this one in 1987. The Charger was lime green, 440 auto with AC but it was loaded with bondo.

Typical of most MUSCLE cars, this one did not age gracefully. Abuse and wear and tear sidelined this car from 1987 until 1990 when restoration began. Today, with very few modifications the R/T appears in very close to stock condition. This car is B7 blue with a blue interior.

OK, I know I need some more recent photos, but these (below) are of Carlisle in 2004. Ricky P. cruised down with us in his 68 Charger (383-Auto) parked to my left (your right) . Kevin Graham from the Coronet Registy is here in the white shirt.

I drove it to Carlise 2006 with Jackie S. This is the year we met Les Otten from the Red Sox who is also a Mopar freak. (69 Hemi GTX and a 69 Barracuda Formula s 4-speed) Those photos are coming under the Carlisle 2006 link.
