1981 Pontiac Trans Am

The 1980's comes alive. Ronald Reagan, MTV and Journey, (on casette tape) give a ride a proper background.

Talk about identity issues, here is a car design from 1970 making it's final apperance in 1981. Much had changed in the USA in those 11 years.

This was the last year for this body style which was the second for the legendary Firebird and Chevrolet Camaro. It was also the last year that Trans Ams would be assembled with Pontiac V-8s as they had been since 1967. These engines were severely de-tuned and clogged up with emission reduction equipment. Disappointing considering the Pontiac racing and performance heritage that these engines represent.

Starting in 1982 the new Trans Am would be powered only by a 5.0- liter Chevrolet V-8 and it became nearly indistinguishable from the Camaro.

Total Trans Am production in 1981 was 33,493.

This Trans Am, which was purchased new from Columbia Pontiac in Dorchester MA, has been owned continuously by the same family since new. It has been driven 119,000 miles and had a questionable future until recently.

Despite its high mileage this vehicle is complete and rust free. It was used for 9 years and has been in dry storage for the last 17.

It shouldn't be difficult nor particularly expensive to restore and could be roadworthy within the next twelve months.

Also photo'd above is the family 78 Lemans Wagon and the 77 GMC 3/4 ton 2WD GMC Sierra Grande.

Now that it is considered an antique and values are beginning to rise modestly, it is slowly being refurbished. In the past year it has had just enough money invested to carry the refurbishment past the point of no return. It is equipped with a 4.9-liter four barrel V-8 and 4 wheel disc brakes and Radial-Tuned Suspension (RTS).

Current Restoration work includes a new heater core, fuel tank, brakes and brake lines. Other than that, it runs and drives fine.

Looks like I will need a space saver spare!                       I love the 80's! This is a throw back to 85 for sure.
